I'm voice teacher, Karyn O'Connor, and I help singers and speakers all over the world achieve vocal freedom, health, skillfulness, and artistry, grow in confidence, and develop healthy, positive relationships with their voices. I also teach acting skills and help students prepare for their upcoming auditions and roles using method acting concepts.

It would be my pleasure to work with you and help you along the journey to achieving your personal and professional singing and acting goals! I offer a number of online and in-studio lesson options and services to meet the differing needs of voice users (ages 12 and up) all over the world.

My clients can receive help with:

  • Singing technique

    • We'll build on your technical strengths, address the inefficiencies and mechanical and psychological interferences that have been getting in your way, and systematically build a solid technical foundation.

  • Vocal coaching

    • I'll coach you in how to ‘map’ a song and we’ll work through the stylistic elements of singing, including song interpretation, characterization, diction, phrasing, song arrangement, and style-specific sound making.

  • Speaking voice

    • If you rely on your voice for your job. you need it to be healthy and confident-sounding. I'll assess your voice use and provide you with strategies for using your breath and 'projecting' (resonating) your voice more effectively so that you can eliminate hoarseness, vocal fatigue, etc. and speak with more comfort, ease, and confidence.

  • Vocal health and rehabilitation

    • I use speech therapy principles and tools to help you heal from vocal pathologies, including nodules, muscle tension dysphonia, and vocal fatigue.

  • Audition preparation

    • I'll assist you with the application and audition process for college, performing arts high school, musical theatre productions, professional gigs, call-backs, and/or the National Association of Teachers of Singing student auditions, song and monologue selection, selecting 32- and/or 16-bar cuts that will help you showcase your range of expression and highlight your vocal strengths, and performance development.

  • Acting coaching

    • Using method acting techniques, I'll assist you with monologues for auditions, role preparation, and creating a convincing performance.

  • Recording preparation

    • We'll polish up your technique and I'll coach you through the artistic and stylistic elements of singing – phrasing, dynamics, etc. - as you prepare to record your vocals. Recording studio coaching is also offered at an hourly rate.

  • Performance coaching

    • We'll work on microphone technique, set pacing, what to say and do between songs, stage presence, how to communicate with other members of the band while on stage, how to engage your audience, and more. Together, we'll help to create a confident, memorable performance.

  • One-time consultations and assessments of your vocal technique

    • We'll speak about your voice use and current challenges or complaints and then I'll take you through a series of exercises that will help me assess your skills and diagnose what is interfering with your voice's freedom, ease, and comfort. I'll provide you with training tools that will address your current needs and help you continue working toward your goals on your own after we meet.

  • Workshops and group lessons

    • I offer online and local workshops with focuses on various vocal topics. Check out Workshops on this site for more details about upcoming online and local workshops.
